Back to historical classes, we know that United States Botanic Garden is one of the botanic garden that placed on the US Capitol in Washington, D.C. This botanical garden was supervised by the American Congress via the Architect, which is responsible for the maintenance of the landscape of US Capitol. This United States Botanic Garden is open daily, even on the federal holidays, and this garden is considered as the oldest operating botanic garden in the US.
This United States Botanic Garden were suggested by the Columbian Institute in 1816. This idea was also supported by the Washington Botanical Society that was organized in 1817. Beginning on 1820, President James Monroe prepared 5 acres of landscape for this national greenhouse. Thomas Jefferson was the most influental person which is interested to cleaned up the brush that covered the whole land, thus begin the plantation some rows of Lombardy Poplars.
In late 1867, Congress also provided a large amount of money for the construction of the Greenhouse Conservatory. This dome was erected for about thirty feer long and 60 feet high. In order to address the Civil War, there are several historic trees such as Crittenden Oak stood on the site. There are also Chinese Oak trees from the grave of Cunfucius and some other that also have a historic associations and legacy.
There are a lot of discussions about to move the garden began in August, 1922. Congress felt that the new location would provide an enlargement of the Capitol Grounds that can affords an area for garden of flowers that can show a great beauty and pleasant view. In the early 1933, the main building was changed and moved to its present location on the Mall, on the southwest of the capitol. National Garden also provides a laboratory for environmental and botanical education.
This United States Botanic Garden consist with three locations: The Conservatory, Production Facility and Bartholdi Park. The Conservatory itself is divided to many seperated rooms, and each of this room represents a unique living habitat. The biggest part of this Conservatory is Jungle Species, including the second story catwalk, so we can observed the jungle from below and above. In this United States Botanic Garden, there are also a room for rare and endangered plants. In order to encourage your child in plants, there are also a room of Children’s Garden, which is features a lot of temperate annuals.
